Hello Flyforum, On some white flowers I saw some Empis sp. I only know them from books and the internet, so it was nice to see these flies alive! The backbody of the Empis flies were different, I think it has to do with male and female...(?) And last but not least.., what kind of Empis sp. are these? size ~10-12mm place: Amsterdam Woodforest Robert, 1) male(?) This is Empis trigramma, not uncommon in the Netherlands. The first image is a male (the shape of the male genitalia is characteristic), the second and third are females. Especially in the third image the three dorsal tripes (tri-gramma) are clear. Often found on... umbels.
