Probably E arbustorum - the face does not appear to have a dark stripe down its centre.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. The very small pterostigma indicates that it is E. nemorum (= interrupta). And in males E. arbustorum the 3rd tergite usually has larger yellow markings. Besides, this behaviour is typical for Eristalis nemorum. E. arbustorum doesn't do things like this. |

I think you may be right, as the stigma does appear to be sharply defined. However I find that the orange markings vary considerably in both species. I am sure that I have seen E arbustorum exhibitng this behaviour, or perhaps I should be making a much closer inspection of courting pairs (or triples)? What have others found? Oh lovely shot and the facial stripe is clear, so that is E interruptus.
