Hello the diameter of the blue veronica is less than 15mm. So the flies are verry smal. They came soon after the snow melted away. I met them all near the bottom. Are they Parasyrphus punctulatus? Regards Maja dipdip attached the following image:  [98.08Kb] |

in my opinion, yes. It is easy to confuse with P. maculatus, yuo should look at the colour of stigma ( after M. P. van Veen) Best wishes, Amalia |

Since the pterostigma is light, it should be P. punctulatus.

I would say three out of four is a good score for parasyrphus punctulatus.  In my opinion the first picture (Upper left) shows a male of Melangyna lasiopthalma.
