Syrphidae?

In the Vega archipelago,Norway.

Limited inhabitants on this island, so maybe can go to species.
Abundant at location.

Can take sample to get better shots if helpful, but what do I need to image?

No Syrphidae. Looks more like Ephydra or Setacera (Ephydridae) to me. Does it have a dorsal pattern, then Ephydra (marine), if not Setacera (fresh water). Whatever the genus, species level is impossible without breeding them to adult stage or DNA. Unless of course only 1 species is known from that location

Ok, interesting, thanks.

I think it was marine... at least, very close to tidal zone...but also very stagnant and smelly... ?

I think it also had a dorsal pattern.
Here is another from that day shot whilst underwater...

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
