... Syrphidae? In the Vega archipelago,Norway. Limited inhabitants on this island, so maybe can go to species. Abundant at location. No Syrphidae. Looks more like Ephydra or Setacera (Ephydridae) to me. Does it have a dorsal pattern, then Ephydra (marine), if not Setacera (fresh water). Whatever the genus, species level is impossible without breeding them to adult stage or DNA. Unless of course only 1 species is known from that location

Ok, interesting, thanks. I think it was marine... at least, very close to tidal zone...but also very stagnant and smelly... ? I think it also had a dorsal pattern. Here is another from that day shot whilst underwater... sbushes attached the following image:  [173.58Kb] |
