Hello,

yesterday a 7-8 mm hoverfly male rested on a leaf in our abandoned backyard (northwest Germany). At first sight I thought of a Eupeodes latifasciatus, but that does not seem to fit well. What else could ibt be? An Epistrophe? Or a Parasyrphus?

Hi Jürgen,

Epistrophe grossulariae seems like a good fit here

Greetings, Volker

Hello Volker,

thank you! But I am not sure. There are no bands on abdomen, only slightly connected, nearly rectangular spots. Also the 3rd antennal segments are not completely black, but yellow below.
And the size of 7-8 mm was far too small (P. grossulariae: 12-16 mm, a rather large Epistrophe).
Best regards,
Jürgen

It is sad news. I read him a month ago, as he replied to me about a wrong identification. He was brilliant, as always.
