Unexpected down-time
Probably due to a flood in search bot visits (I can not imagine a DOS attack on Diptera.info) one of the panel scripts on the opening page of the site caused an overload on the database server. As a result the host decided to make the database unavailable until I had sorted the problem. Well, I had sorted the problem but next it took them more than 24 hours to get things back. Anyway, the panel was disabled and another panel is now presented in a more simple version to also reduce the server load. Hopefully everything will keep on moving normally now.

I apologise for any frustration this may have caused you. You can count on it that I was frustrated...

'No worries' as they say down under. Worse things happen at sea and bigger sites than yours have a day or two off every now and then.

Unfortunately I can imagine diptera.info being DDOS'ed. Lets hope it doesn't come to that. But if it does, I hope you have proper backups - losing the accumulated wisdom (and wit) of diptera.info would be a major loss for the world economy Grin

Paul,
Thanks for all your hard work. In my opinion this is one of the most profession entomology site on the net.
If this problem or any other will come down the way I think a good practice will be to use some premade error page until problem is fixed.

I hope you have proper backups

Database backups every day, file backups at least once a week. The database usually is the more vulnerable part and backups are made on a server on a daily basis. Making backups of all files on the site is getting more and more time consuming as the total amount now covers more than two gigs.

What about incremental backups? why to backup files you already backup before?
#6 | Paul Beuk on 15 April 2008 11:08:30
The backups ARE incremental but at present the FTP program still needs to check which of the more than 20,000 files on the server are new or updated. Takes 1-2 hours, depending on the connection I use. Wink
