Dear All,

It is with deep regret I have to inform you of the death of Hans Bartsch, an esteemed member of our community and author of the two volumes on Syrphidae for the Encyclopedia of Swedish Flora and Fauna (Nationalnyckeln). He passed away peacefully early in the morning of 4th April, 2011. He had been ill and hospitalized during the last few weeks.

Sincerely,

Gunilla Stahls

It is not long ago that I met Hans, at the last Syrphidae Symposium in Serbia. A man with a lot of energy, and a lot of plans. Ordering his two volumes in the Nationalnyckeln series was a mere pleasure to me! And still is. I would have thought that he had many more things to do in his life. It saddens me greatly that he has not been given this time.
Needless to say that his passing away is a big shock to me, and a great loss for Scandinavian entomology. My condolences go to his dear friends and family.

André
