I am no expert in Diptera but identified this to be Culiseta morsitans by using the key by Utrio (1976). The larva is from southern Finland and was collected in early spring from a temporary pond. I would appreciate your comments on the id, thank you.

a detailed photo of the siphon would help but I would guess it is closer to Culex pipiens/torrentium. But when you say it is from a temporary waterbody Aedes/Ochlerotatus would be more likely. But showing the positions of the hairs on the siphon would help to ID.

These were collected at the same time but may be a different species and not fully-grown:

I still think that the first one is Culex, but the second group of species are in fact Aedes/Ochlerotatus. Siphon is much shorter...too short for Culex, but good enough for Culiseta/Aedes/Ochlerotatus. But as the watebody is temporary, Aedes/Ochlerotatus would be the best possible guess.

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
