I found this fly on 21/06/2016, near Faliraki, Rhodes. It keys out at Saropogon atricolor (male) in Engel's key (many thanks to Reinoud van der Broek for the PDF!). I have little doubt about this ID, because it corresponds pretty well to the original description:

http://www.zobodat.at/pdf/WEMS_1_0001-0010.pdf

and to the photo of the type specimen:

http://eos.naturkundemuseum-berlin.de/result?Family=Asilidae&Genus=Saropogon&Subgenus=&Species=atricolor&InfraspecificEpithet=&AuthorYear=Loew%2C%201857

However, I could find very little about this sp. in the Internet, and it seems from whatever is there that the sp. is known from Rhodes only, and only the male is described.
Does anyone know something more, or more recent about this sp.?
Thanks for any help in advance!
Greetings,
Henrik

Thanks for your comment Piluca! Is it possible that only the type specimen of this sp. is known? :-o

No idea... but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be so Wink However I am too new in Asilidae world to have a proper opinion on this and I am much more centered in Western species. Other Asilidologists might have more info on this species.
