Dear Sarah, the first picture shows a female of Eristalis sp.. Perhaps somebody else can say, what species this is. The second picture is a female of Episyrphus balteatus. This is an unmistacable species and the most abundant hoverfly in middleeurope Gisela |

Dear Sarah, the eyes of the females are divided by a greater interspace, the eyes of the males join together among the most species (but there are some exeptions). Moreover the genus Sphaerophoria shows a greater sexual dimorphism as the most other Syrphid-species. Greetings Gisela Merkel-Wallner |

The female Eristalis most likely is Eristalis pratorum. Maybe you have another picture to post here, with a better look at the eyes and face? Greetzz, Andr |
