I saw thie robberfly last sunday (6 May) on the St Pietersberg, near Maastricht at the extreme southern tip of the Netherlands. It flied at a chalk grassland, somewhat shelterd by shrubs. Medium sized robberfly, say around 12 mm (but I'm awfully bad at making such judgemenst!). Can it be IDed?

and another photograph, not the same fly though.

May be even not the same species?? I noticed colour differences in the abdomen and eyes, and in the femoral bristles on the third leg...no idae how important these are though!

Both are males of Didysmachus picipes.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
