Hi Forum,

Im trying to find information on the Tabanidae Silvius vituli.

When i look in your Gallery S. vituli and S. alpinus are different species, but Fauna Europaea states that they are synonyms, and the only real name is S. alpinus.

http://www.faunae...p?id=66136

Should i categorize the S. vituli under S. alpinus?

Any advice would be helpfull.

Cheers

Hi! Silvius vituli is the old name for S. alpinus (although according to Olsufjev, 1977, alpinus is the nomen oblitum for vituli Wink, hence in the soviet and post-soviet literature this species is still mentioned as vituli). So vituli in the gallery should be corrected on alpinus. There is a lot of confusion in the names of Diptera, especially in such a complex groups as Tabanidae, Ceratopogonidae, etc. And not the least cause of such imbroglio is the notorious "iron curtain".
