I would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me what family this fly is in. Of course, any other information would be appreciated too!

Hello Stephen,
This is a male syrphid of the species Syritta pipiens.
Characteristic are the thick hind femur, the shape of the head and abdomen and it's coloration.
