April 30, 2012 in my garden next to deciduous forest near Copenhagen, Denmark, close to the ground in the vegetation. My first thought vas B. testacea, - it has small black bristles on the border of scutellum, but arista not plumose. B. panzeri, known from my area is without bristles on scutellum, and this has bristles, as I see it. I know, they are difficult on photos, but I try anyway. Is ID possible? Thanks i advance. Considering the seemingly small sensory pit on the basoflagellomere and the presence of bristles along the posterior margin of the scutellum, I think this is probably B. dorsata. |

B. dorsata is considered to be extinct in Denmark. Only 2 specimens are known in a collection more than 100 years ago, so I dare not even hope, it is true, not yet.

It's always good to be cautious about such things. On the other hand, B. dorsata seems to be expanding its range. We found the first specimen in the Netherlands in 2007, and by now we know it from at least four localities. |

Then we have the classical problem: I did not catch the fly, and how do I come from "probably" to " it IS" B. dorsata? Maybe a second opinion from another specialist. Thanks a lot for your answers! Ruth Ahlburg Denmark |
