Here I am again (defying frustrating problems with my server to connect!) with another Diptera photographed near Rome in Italy. Can anyone help me identify it? Thanks, Sarah

To get you on track: Therevidae (stiletto flies).

I've done a quick Google on the Therevidae and the nearest I can find is Thereva sp., perhaps T. nobilitata. Thanks a million Paul, Sarah

I am by no means certain about the species mentioned. The illustrated specimen has distinctly marked wings and I cannot recall ever having seen nobilitata having that in Northwestern Europe. but I may be mistaken...

Paul, you are right.

The wing markings should be very distinctive.
Never seen anything like it (in Thereva, that is)

Thanks Paul and Theo. I'm starting to realise just how complex (but fascinating) the world of the Diptera really is! For now, I'll just label it as Therevidae, then if I find anything more specific, I'll see what you all think before committing myself! Again, thanks, Sarah

That is Thereva spiloptera Wiedemann 1824 according to Kevin Holston (Stockholm)...

I can no longer send private messages (and maybe not receive?), even though my inbox and outbox are not yet full. I write, click "send" and they disappear and never show up in the outbox.
