Hello,

Saw this fly today (10 C., noon, east of Netherl., app. 4-5 mm).
It was half in the water (you can see the capilary attraction in the image) and it's "covered" with black stuff. Is it ill (fungus?) or...
Any ideas please? Thanks.

For some reason the fly fas lost some of its water-repellent coating. Looks like it it smeared with something sticky. Perhaps oil? Any oil contamination will surely spell disaster for most flies.
