This is a Chrysops sp. I do not have literature for males, so do not know which species this one would be.

Other views are available on my web site.

Well, I would have liked to see more of it (legs),
but my guess is a male Ch. caecutiens.

If it's from Hungary and if it's not from a peatbog, it must be caecutiens.

Not too many peatbogs around here, so most likely Ch. caecutiens. Also this species is the most common Chrysops in Hungary. I observed this fly relatively early, sometimes in late April or early May.

Theo, thx for your help in this and other threads.

That's definitely Ch. caecutiens.

You're welcome
