This egg mass (about 1 cm long) was photographed by a friend. I am sure that the emerging larvae are sawflies (Symphyta), but can anyone suggest which species might be involved? The egg mass was laid on a window - a rather unusual substrate!

Hmm, I have seen similar egg masses laid by Tortricidae (Pyrausta aurata in particular).

Many thanks, Paul - you put me on the right track, and I have found a few on-line pics of torticid and pyralid egg masses just like this. I doubt that we'll get a species, though - they all look very similar. Frown
