I took this photo on 24th August at Draycote Meadows Warwickshire. I think its Bactromyia aurulenta but would like a confirmation from the experts.

Hi Walwyn. I'm not expert, but I'm almost sure it isn't Bactromyia aurulenta. My test, fly looks as Exorista again. Nikita Nikita Vikhrev - Zool Museum of Moscow University |

I'd guess Exorista too, just from the photo. Question to Walwyn - when keying it you should pretty easily get to couplet 112 in Belshaw's key (bare arista & eyes, bare vein R1 and along r4+5 to rm etc) - you should have gone pst there on your way to Bactromyia. So, do you think it has some black hairs behind the head, on top? |

Nope, but then I don't have Belshaw's key (as yet). Thanks. |

It's well worth the investment of a few quid. When you get a copy just remember to update it from our Tachinid Recording Scheme website (http://tachinidae...). You'll find changes to allow for the additional species since 1993 and margin notes to help you make sense of the key |
