As a matter of fact, I was rather surprised to see so much insects (and so little mosquitos, because we were on the coast...).

The arctic has a lot of life during the short summer. Few species in comparison with the tropic of course, but the insect biomass can be impressize considering the conditions. All those migrant geese etc don't fly from Africa to the arctic for nothing Wink

The boreal/arctic Helophilus species are by no means common up north. Having spent a month (total over new last few years) looking for them in northern Finland I've found exactly one H. lapponicus among hundreds of the more common, southern species.
