With both bright colors and interesting markings, I was hoping this fly would be easy to identify to species. But while I did find other images of it on the Internet, they were identified only as Chlorodpidae.

Size 2.5 mm, date 7 July 2006, place West Virginia USA, near a small stream.

This fly had a wonderful way of flying, a sort of hovering flight by which it moved only very slowly toward its destination. It reminded me of the type of flight damselflies use.

ID help appreciated!

The flight you describe is similar as in Thaumatomyia notata in my very own garden. I think yours may very well be T. glabra.
