The attached was photographed on 12/07/06 in South East England. I appologise for the quality , but I thought the markings might be sufficient for an identification to at least the family. It was feeding on what I believe to be hemlock (Oenanthe crocata) growing in the middle of a shallow pond. (My wife won't let me paddle in muddy ponds to get close to flies) I thought it may be a Stratiomys Sp. Odontomyia ornata - hemlock water-dropwort is one of its recorded favourite flowers. A very local species in Britain. Excellent find. Perhaps if you undertake to wash your own socks ...?
