The attached was photographed on 12/07/06 in South East England.

I appologise for the quality , but I thought the markings might be sufficient for an identification to at least the family. It was feeding on what I believe to be hemlock (Oenanthe crocata) growing in the middle of a shallow pond. (My wife won't let me paddle in muddy ponds to get close to flies)

I thought it may be a Stratiomys Sp.

Thanks

Gordon

Odontomyia ornata - hemlock water-dropwort is one of its recorded favourite flowers. A very local species in Britain. Excellent find. Perhaps if you undertake to wash your own socks ...?Wink

Its the socks that are the problem they have holes in them and leak.
