This Syrphid was seen sipping nectar from onion flowers at the northern end of the South Island of New Zealand during the early afternoon in January (summer). Would anyone hazard a gues at what it might be? Maybe a species of Helophilus?

Hello Brad,
Well, I must admit I don't know very much about the Syrphidae of Australia and new Zealand.
I can't tell you whether it is helophilus or not, judging on the colors I would guess not.
But, there is somebody that maybe can help.
It is one of the world specialists in Syrphidae, and his name is C. Thompson.
This one: http://www.sel.barc.usda.gov/Diptera/people/fct.htm
You could send him an email with the picture.
If he answers, please tell us too!
greetings,
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

But I assume it must be some sort of Eristalini, with that strong dip in R4+5?
