This Syrphid was seen sipping nectar from onion flowers at the northern end of the South Island of New Zealand during the early afternoon in January (summer). Would anyone hazard a gues at what it might be? Maybe a species of Helophilus?

sorry, forgot to mention size - about 13 mm long (similar in size to a drone fly- E. tenax). |

Hello Brad, Well, I must admit I don't know very much about the Syrphidae of Australia and new Zealand. I can't tell you whether it is helophilus or not, judging on the colors I would guess not. But, there is somebody that maybe can help. It is one of the world specialists in Syrphidae, and his name is C. Thompson. But I assume it must be some sort of Eristalini, with that strong dip in R4+5?
