I found this mating pair of tipulids in woodland in South Oxfordshire, England today (20/5/2006). Anyone got any ideas what they might be?

These crane flies are quite common in Hungary, too. Possibly the same or related species, the combination of yellowish thorax and the spotty wing is quite characteristic. I am not sure, but these look more like Limoniids to me. There is a large group of species with these three costal spots in Limonia, e.g. L. nigropunctata, tripunctata, pannonica etc., I hope Chen Young will visit the site and maybe he'll be able to confirm or refute this. |
