Is this bombylius major?

This bee-fly seemed much darker and more banded on the abdomen than the previous bee-flies I've had in the garden which were ID'd as Bombylius major. Brian V. |

Looks like Bombylius major to me In my experience you really have to look hard to find any other species of beefly in the UK. Also, with that wing colouration it is very distinctive - of the species with a long proboscis one (discolor) has speckled wings and the others are much smaller with unpatterned wings. |
