Hello,

I am new here, I hope you can help me giving a name to some of my pictures. This one seems to suffer from obstipation ( Eys near Maastricht, IX 2003 ).

Hello Ben,

Welcome to the forum with this nice pic. It is a species of Calliopum, family Lauxaniidae. It looks like obstipation but this is what we call a 'gravid female': a female with an abdomen so full of eggs that is eems about to burst open any moment.

This nice picture shows the Lauxaniid has striped eyes. I noticed that flies from various families have one or more horizontal stripes in their eyes. Do the stripes correspond to ommatidia with different functions or orientation?
