Hi, Here is another sunbathing syrphid from our arboretum, this time sitting on a Rhododendron leaf together with a small specimen of probably Pollenia. Could it belong to Cheilosia? Thanks, Sundew Sundew attached the following image: [190.16Kb] |

Scutellum is yellowish so I'd expect somewhere in Syrphini, not Cheilosia.

Looking at the dusting of the scutum, the pronounced nose... I think it's a very dark E. balteatus. But the light is really really bad, sorry. |

Well, we have longed for a bright spring sun to shine, but its result is bad photos... I have my doubts as to E. balteatus regarding habit and shape of abdomen, but who knows - thanks for trying an ID in any case! Sundew |

Shape of abdomen is strange, yes. Could be an intersexe...? |
