Sorry about this but am still trying to attach my photo. Larva found on very old birch tree trunk in birch woodland in Scottish Highlands. Seen today March 3rd. with sunshine and snow showers. Probably Tipulidae or one of the related families - not enough detail to go much further, I'm afraid, but I think this might be an interesting one to rear out!
