ID please. I found this appr. 8mm fly at a university campus in Shenzhen, Southern China, 50m above sea level. Do you know the species from these picrtures? Thank you so much, Jörg

These are very hard to identify. The key I have seen depends on male genital characters even to get to genus.

I searched the text for red and orange. The only relevant match was the species Parasarcophaga ruficornis, also known as Sarcophaga ruficornis. I can't say if you have that species or genus.

Thank you so much for your quick and interesting reply. I will be very careful and try some research whether it could be found in Southern China. But good to learn that it might be one of those which offer an "educated guess" just from photos :-)

Kindest regards from Hongkong, Jörg

Dear John (and all), sorry for pestering you again.Today (29.4.2024) I saw in a little park close to Hongkong Harbor this fly, again with orange antennae, eyes closer together (male?) as well as a red tip at the end of the abdomen. Furthermore, wings are more open so abdominal pattern is visible much better. Does it make it any easier to go towards Parasarcophaga ruficornis? Thank you so very much for looking at it again, Jörg

Different view. By the way, I estimate 12-14mm, big animal!
