Photographed today by a river in Zhejiang China. Approx. 5mm in length. Could it be a Muscidae spec. or something in another family? Thanks!

It appears to belong to the group with Lispe kowarzi (which is in China but has marked wings) and L. atrifrontata (which is from Australia).

The group was reviewed by Vikhrev in 2014 in Amurian Zoological Journal 6(2), https://azjournal...e/view/364. I can not match your fly with any of his species and subspecies. The wings should be darker.

No, no! John, it is indeed Lispe kowarzi pallitarsis Stein, 1909. Darkened wings has L. fulvitarsus. This fly is exactly what shown in 2014 in Amurian Zoological Journal 6(2) at Fig. 43b. Even abdomen on guplox's photo has "abdomen with whitish spots on tergites 3 to 5"
