An acquaintance sent me these pictures of two Asilidae, seen not far from each other. The first is unmistakably Molobratia teutonus. The second is quite similar, but the black antennae and red tarsi confuse me. It seems that part of the abdomen is red. She estimated the size of the first to be about 20 mm. The second was larger, between 20 and 25 mm. Could the second one be a female Dasypogon diadema ? Can someone shed some light on this ?

It looks very much like this specimen from spain... https://diptera.info/photogallery.php?photo_id=3146

Hi,

That's correct, or at least the genus Dasypogon. For correctness-sake you could label the picture as Dasypogon cf. diadema. Dasypogon is, unfortunately, very variable.

Best, Jonne

Thank you so much Jonne. It will probably be diadema as there are not many species in France and diadema is quite common. Fauna Europaea cites only : diadema, albofasciatus (now Stichopogon) and atratus (doubtfully present). But it is wise to label it cf diadema.

Some flies preserved in ethanol and then pinned often get the eyes sunken, how can this be avoided? Best answer: I usually keep alcohol-collected material in alcohol

Yes, dipterologists from far abroad, please buy your copy at veldshop. Stamps will be expensive, but he, the book is unreasonably cheap Smile
