another Brachyopa (?) male from a forestpath today (northwest Germany). Ca. 8 mm.

I would look at testacea and vittta (so far never seen them myself). The latter is supposed to be very large and have relatively long wings.

I'm not sure about the 8 mm. May well be 10 mm, like this male: https://insektenf...adID=52570
The females were distinctively smaller.
