No, but close.

The topcel has a longer petiole, which suggests Estheria in Dexiinae - Dexiini, as is Prosena.
Prosena is easily recognized by the very long proboscis, that is, if you can have a look at the head !

Thanks Theo
Is it possible to identify the species ?
I tried with your key but had a problem with the colour of the scutellum :
it isn't completely red but not so dark, ...
What's your opinion ?

NB: Sorry for the private message but I confused PM=Private Message with Post Message. Sad

Hi Eric,

Under the assumption that the picture is taken in Central Europe (Belgium ?), the species is definitely Estheria cristata. Scutellum largely orange and dc 3+3 (though difficult to see).
But, if it is taken in the Mediterrean, I cannot be sure.

Greetings

Hi Eric,

Do you have more information ?
Estheria cristata has become extinct in The Netherlands somewhere around 1920 (!), so its occurence in Belgium is of interest

Hi Theo,
I took this picture 23/7/2005 in the locality of Remouchamps, at the extreme east of the calcareous zone (excuse my bad english !). The fly was eating on flowers of Heracleum sphondylium in a path between a wet meadow (whith horses) and forest. Is this type of information you are waiting ? If not, what precision would be useful ? UTM coordinates ? Other plants or insects in the same place ? ...
Thanks for your interest in my observation.

Hi Eric,

Thank you.
That was the kind of information I meant.

Great find !
