Hi This fly made my day! This photo was taken by Sean in Anglevillas - Florida - USA. Taken on 20 August 2006. This fly is a Mythicomyiidae! I'm in awe! This one of the reasons I love DIPTERA.  Anyone could help me to get a Mythicomyiidae's key?

hm... not sure now... at rest the mythicomyiidae usually have the wings held together over the abdomen. |

It is indeed a member of the Phthiriinae. it is in the genus Tmemophlebia, but what species, I'm not sure. Many of the species in this genus look similar and the male genitalia need to be dissected. There is only one species known from Florida (Tmemophlebia melanofemur) but it has strikingly brown legs. This does not. It keys to T. painterorum but that species is only known from Guerrero and Veracruz in Mexico. Tmemophlebia are almost always associated with sand dunes (their pale color allows them camouflage with the sand). Great photo! -Neal Edited by nealevenhuis on 22-02-2008 06:36 |
