Dear all,

Can this be Tipula varipennis. I placed this photo's last year, but now I saw on a Dutch site that someone named this Tipula varipennis.

What do you think?

Greetings,

Shar

No, this one looks like Eutonia barbipes to me.

Dear Chen,

Do you have some more information? Or can you point out a website, I cannot find much on the Internet.

Thanks.

Notice the palp is short in this crane fly which indicates species not in the family Tipulidae. I am not familiar with any website that might help you out. Check Xespok's website to see if he has any images. Or you can also take a look of the counterpart species of Eutonia in North America for comparison.

Maybe it is Limonia (Metalimnobia) hudsonica?

I saw a picture on the website: http://iz.carnegiemnh.org/cranefly/limoniinae.htm, that looks like my crane fly.

Shar

ps. sorry I do not know how to post a hyperlink.

I believe the size of your crane fly is much larger than Limonia (Metalimnobia) hudsonica. Here is an image of a female Eutonia barbipes for your comparison. I think they look much alike only your image is a male.

Dear Chen,

I think you are right, the crane fly was indeed much larger than 22 mm. Eutonia barbipes it will be.

;)
