Hi, i also took this image of what i assume is a picture-winged fly at Noar Hill in early May last year. Its a downland site with wooded areas in the UK. The fly is ~4-5 mm long at max. It seemed to be wandering about displaying.

As an aside i did see earlier this month a similar shaped fly with black spots on the wings, much larger, and distinctly orange at a local chalk downland site near Salisbury. No photograph, but ~8-10 mm. Any ideas?

Thanks

Richard

The photographed fly is a Geomyza tripunctata (Anthomyzidae).
