Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Small black fly

Any ideas on this (I've given up guessing :) ) about 6mm body length taken Yesterday South coast UK.

Have you tried Phania funesta? (Diptera, Tachinidae) :) Look for a subscutellum, then note the very silvery face and general head shape. It also has a very distinctive way of standing with its wings open, as in the pic :)

Thanks Chris- found a picture and it does look exactly the same... and I was going to guess at least a Tachinid - would have got it right :)

Nice photo - I saw lots of these today on local nature reserves in southern England :)
