Hi

* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 2007.04.22
* size - 10 mm (large fly)
* habitat - woodland, near river
* substrate - air :)
* temperature - 30 ?C

This fly tried to bite me, but I catched it first :) It is a tabanid female - so she wanted sucked me.. :o the male only like sucks nectar, not blood. ;)

It is a very impressive fly to see moving and it is alive yet. ;)

Haematopota sp. (perhaps pluvialis, but I don?t know the characters for species in Haematopota sp.

EDIT ---> Title changed from "Haematopota sp." to "Haematopota cf. pluvialis"

NEW EDIT ----> Title changed from "Haematopota cf. pluvialis." to "Haematopota cf. eugeniae / ocelligera"; final change to Tabanidae female fly - Haematopota pluvialis

Hi guys!
Stephan only meaned "Haematopota looks like H. on Tony's avatar":D
As for species, Jorge may be quite right with H.pluvialis, but there are Tabanidae experts at our forum...

Well, I have my reservations.
Much too black-and-white for pluvialis.
Looks more like eugeniae or ocelligera.
Need to check my notes

Yes, thank you.
I'm not sure, it is either ocelligera or pluvialis.
the lights ad colouration are so varying, depending on the flash, that I've got the feeling I've been tricked by some pictures (the scutellum is quite white in some, while quite dark in the last ...).
So, it might be pluvialis after all. Sorry...
