I am confused. Are these photos all showing Scatophaga stercoraria?
Some some much hairier than others (I have just replaced an earlier image with the one right below, showing a very hairy individual).
Some are hairy, some are less so. Some were yellow, some green, some gray.
They weren't on dung, but were hunting like Tiger Beetles, preying upon other flies.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Place: Sugar Maple tree, forest, West Virginia USA, 13 March 2007. Size: 8.7 mm.

Here is one with its prey, which I believe is a Mycetophilid.

This one was more green in color and less hairy than many of the others.

Stephen, all images excluding N4 is S. stercoraria. N4 seems has not black antennae and bare arista.

Thanks, Nikita! I will work on posting several views of the gray one as a new posting, and perhaps an ID will be possible of it too. Thanks again for all your help.
