Hi,

I'm confused, it looks to belong in Tipula but I can't match it up with those with dark wings. I found it on 15th May 2009 in my garden near Lincoln UK. It was quite big but I can't give a size.

I only got two photos, it was at a difficult angle and place.

Perhaps Tipula (Vestiplex) nubeculosa Meigen, 1804, but it would be better to hear the view of P. Oosterbroek |t

Thank you Jorge, I think you might have it. If Pjotr doesn't see this I will contact him. :)

According to key by Stubbs, 1996b (Provisional key, downloadable from literature section of CCW at http://nlbif.eti.uva.nl/ccw/) this is Tipula (Vestiplex) hortoorum, considered a rare species by him.
Try key yourself and let me know what you think.
Kind regards,
Pjotr Oosterbroek

Pjotr, I tried the key but got hopelessly lost. I thought the shape of the ovipositor wasn't right for T. hortorum, the top part adjoining the abdomen reaches in a high arc in the photo of a female on your site.

I posted it on the forum in the UK, a suggestion of Tipula varipennis was given. What do you think?
