There is an easy way to tell Merodon from Eristalis - look at the venation, where the outer cross-vein (vein M) joins R4+5. In Eristalis this is very close to the wing margin, but in Merodon (see http://www.giffbe...5-0006.jpg) it joins half-way between the loop and the wing margin.
