Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Huge Face on this Fly

The face really extends far forward on this fly! It is Tachinidae, is that right? And is it possible to take the ID further?

Only one antennae showing; maybe the other one is down below being cleaned by the mouthparts?

Photographed on an herbaceous plant alongside a pond, West Virginia USA, taken in early August.

Hi Stephen

It's a Tachinid, and it is very fresh !
What you see is the 'escape balloon' the fly uses to get out of the pupa. The remnants of this balloon soon get lost. But you got this one before.

Theo, Thanks for explaining why this fly has such a huge face. Diptera.info is such a good education for me!
