I watched this fly feeding on ivy nectar on 20 September in Clitheroe. The eggs seemed to be dropped randomly. I have read that the larvae develop in wasp nests; do they hatch out on the ivy and attach themselves to queen wasps that come to feed? It seems a chancy business. I wonder if the egg has a sticky surface to prevent it falling to the ground? I didn't see what became of this one.
