Hello List,
Here is a syrphid photographed in Corsica, at the end of July 2008. Approx 8-10 mm. My only guess is Eumerus, but I do not really have the info to infirm or confirm it (my only key deals with belgian fauna, and I am rather confident it is not in it.Any suggestion ?

Correct, but like I said: no clue. Or maybe a clue (spinipes?), but too lazy to check it.

Ah, but the point is that I'm not more clever with the creature in hand, so I tend to live and let live...
But i fully agree that it is the only way to be certain of course!...
