Seen Racketmans post and recognised a similarity of flies which are here in my garden in Shetland. Have looked through the Gallery and my ones appear to be Scatopse notata. They have been here for about 3 weeks

Thanks for the ID Paul. The only one on my checklist for Shetland is S.notata, so I guess this is a first.

I never like to disagree with Paul, but this is very early for Apiloscatopse, a distictly autumnal genus; if you could send me a few I'll try to nail it for certain.
