Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Which family?

From Turkey, 30 may this year. Close to coast in mid south. Along small river in lushly vegetated place.

I thought about Stratiomyidae, but have some doubts too. Could anyone confirm/correct this tentative ID?

Correct. This is Hermetia illucens.

Nope, you're quite right Stephane.
Hermetia illucens is now a cosmopolitic species, found on all the continents, I've seen pictures on the net from everywhere.

Interesting! According to Fauna Europea this species is not known from the Near East, including Asian Turkey. Is FE incomplete, or might this be a first record for Turkey? (Can hardly believe that!)

Thanks Paul! So FE has a back log, as I expected.... Nevertheless, first observation in 2003 is not that long ago!
