This one reminds me of Peleteria rubescens. However, the habitat (woodland edge with meadow) being quite different from my earlier observations (dunes), en knowing that the devil is often in the details, I would like a corrobaration or correction (my liking in that order...)

I'm not sure if hairy eyes are devilish detalis, but indeed another species in another habitat:
Linnaemyia vulpina.
Common on heaths in august

Interesting, I had thought "maybe
L.vulpina" but didn't say because the habitat was "wrong" and
vulpina is such a habitat-specific species :)

Well, the heath is quite close to where I saw it (less then 500 m I guess).
