Thread subject: Diptera.info :: VERY large Tabanus (06.07.26) --> Tabanus sudeticus

Hello,

this nearly 30 mm long fly flew around in our abandoned courtyard (northwest Germany) today. I read, that Tabanus sudeticus can be distinguished from the now very rare Tabanus bovinus by its brown eyes (T. bovinus: green eyes).
But the colour of the eyes changes according to light incidence. :|

Sorry, no more photos before it flew away...

I agree the eye looks very greenish, but antenna clearly reddish with a strong dorsal tooth, so sudeticus no doubt. On this side of the Atlantic, they don't get any bigger !
