This is an old photo from 31/03/17. I didn't estimate the fly's size at the time but it is on a hawthorn leaf. It was taken in Bournemouth in the south of England in a hedgerow setting some 2km from the sea. From the bristles and wing venation I think it is a Tachinid but I am still very new to identifying flies so any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it is a Tachinid: Macquartia dispar or viridana male, most likely the first.

Many thanks, Macquartia dispar is what I had matched it to but it is good to have a second opinion.

Are you sure about the date, 31th of March ? If so, what would the leaves be ?

Yes, the date is correct. The leaves are Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna which comes into leaf towards the end of March in the south of England.
