Good evening all,
Could it be that this is Eristalinus aeneus ? I have found a comment by Gerard on Bugguide.net, about it being an introduced species in the USA : this picture was shot in Boston, Massachussett, in July 2005.

For North-America I see only two species listed: aeneus and taeniops.
So this must be aeneus.
Interesting coloration!

Thanks for the info Andre. I am afraid the flash has killed the picture, but the conditions were hard indeed : the picture was shot on Little Brewster Island, at the mouth of Boston harbor, and the Atlantic wind was blowing its best, making a still shot impossible !
